Spinning Demonstrations:
One purpose of our guild is to foster an interest in spinning with the general public. Demonstrating at fairs, museums, farms, schools and other places is one very enjoyable way to interest people in spinning and to educate the public generally about the craft. Our guild tries to have a presence at a number of events every year. All are welcome to participate, even novice spinners. Basic knowledge of spinning is all that is needed, as the public sees and talks to you for a few minutes only while passing by, and generally asks only the most basic questions. To sign up for any particular demonstration, email Sharilyn Ross.
Demonstration Dates for 2010:
So far, here are some of the places we'll be demonstrating in 2010. Specific dates and times will be posted as soon as known.
- April
- April 16th- Earth Day Celebration
Time: 9am - 2pm, at the Honeoye Falls Lima Manor School (Elementary) 147 East St. in Honeoye Falls, 14472 for 2nd to 5th graders.
The time is broken up into 4 sessions, 2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon. Volunteer for all or any combination of sessions.
In keeping with an Earth Day theme, the event coordinator wants the kids to learn about the wonder of plants and animals and what they do for us. She would like the kids to learn how raw materials move from fiber to cloth and clothing, and the presentation can incorporate any of the fiber arts.
Demo area: Inside with an elementary school sized lunch table for set-up. (There is a option to move outside if the weather is nice but only if you decide you want to.)
Lunch is free to the volunteers.
If there is a volunteer who would like to bring a fiber animal, the school and administration are happy to accommodate.
- April 24th- Lollipop Farm- Farm Day.
This one is a lot of fun. If you like talking to kids, come to this one. It's a family day at Lollipop and the kids are always fascinated with the spinning.
- April 24th & 25th- Artistry in Thread
Held at the Rochester Museum & Science Center. Very nice venue for sitting and spinning all day. This festival is for all fiber arts, there are many needleworking guilds doing demos, a number of vendors of handcrafted items of all kinds- weaving, quilting, etc, etc, and many attendees are handworkers of some kind.
- August/September
- NY State Fair, Syracuse, NY.
Free parking and admission if you do this one.
- September
- At our own festival (of course!)
- October
- National Alpaca Farmers Day- includes many farms around the area.
Sharilyn will have a list of farms who want spinners as it gets closer.
- Lazy Acre Alpacas, 8830 Baker Road, Bloomfield
