Warm Extremities is a long-standing program of the Genesee Valley Handspinning Guild, Inc. Beginning in 1993, fiber was collected, spun, and made into hats, mittens and scarves and distributed to those in need. Recent donations focused on guild members’ needs: chemo caps were donated to area cancer centers and newborn caps were sent in honor of a member’s baby who spent several months in the hospital. We continue to find ways to warm the community. Please contact our Warm Extremities coordinator for more information on receiving donations.
The guild offers free demonstrations as a way to educate the public about various aspects of spinning. Volunteers have actively promoted handspinning since the early days of the guild by providing live spinning demonstrations at numerous community venues. Demonstrations are offered at school and church groups, scouting organizations, farms, museums, county fairs, fiber related events, and our own Finger Lakes Fiber Festival.
Drop spindling, wheel spinning, fiber qualities and preparation are just a few of the topics covered. Members donate their time and expertise to share the history and innovations of handspinning. Please contact the guild’s demonstration coordinator for more information on setting up a demonstration.
