Membership 2010- It's membership renewal time again. Elizabeth Osborn has made a few changes to the membership form, including adding a space for your Ravelry name. She would appreciate everyone filling out a new form this year because of the changes and the extra info she would like. You don't need to fill out what hasn't changed, only the new info. The new membership form is now posted here. Contact Elizabeth if you have any questions regarding membership.
February meeting - February's meeting is going to be a lot of fun! We are going to have a "Spinning Olympics". Ann Marie is in charge, and your webmistress hears that there will be quite a few very interesting games and contests. Also, we'll have the drawing for another anniversary gift. When you sign the sign-in sheet at each meeting, your name will be entered in the monthly drawing. The drawing will be held at the end of the business meeting each month.
Spinning Olympics - Ann Marie will be in charge of the Spinning Olympics. She asks that all participants bring a Golden book (she will have a few extras if someone doesn't have one), a man's tie, a niddy-noddy and a ball winder.
New Guild Formed - There is a new spinning guild in the Buffalo area. They are calling themselves Common Threads guild and they held their first meeting Sunday, Jan 17th, in Lancaster, NY. Several of our guild members went out for the meeting- your webmistress and Phyllis Gula drove out together, Joan Lewis was there, and Chris Frayda and Libby Llop and Val Gropp. Val and Libby had a vending table upstairs. The guild will be associated with Hull House, a historical house that is slowly being renovated, and part of the guild members dues will go to support the house. About 30 people came to the meeting, the program was drop spindling, and there was coffee, tea, and goodies spread out in the kitchen for all. The women felt there was a need in their area for a guild like this- they are focusing on spinners and dyers- and are very excited to be able to begin one. Judging from the gathering on Sunday, they are off to a wonderful start.
GVHG Calendar - The calendars are available! The 2010 GVHG calendar has lots of photos of all our fiber, skeins, finished items, pics from meetings, and birthdays all marked. Calendars are $12. See Diane at the meetings. If you need one before then, call her or email her.
Neckwarmer Exchange - Whether you call it a neckwarmer, a gator, a cowl, or a wimple, it's a great accessory that you will never want to be without, once you've had one. We had fun picking our anonymous brown bags of fiber at the November meeting. Items are due back at the May 2010 meeting. Remember these special rules from our president: 1) Please don't tell whose fiber you have or try to find out who has yours. 2) Please don't spin the fiber at a meeting, or bring the yarn or finished item in for show and tell. 3) Please don't post pics of the yarn, or the item in progress, on your blog or in your Ravelry projects. We want to be surprised when we open our bags next May!
Neckwarmer Patterns - Your webmistress has gathered some neckwarmer patterns and has posted them to the Patterns and Ideas link. There are 11 crochet patterns and 33 knitting patterns now posted for all kinds of neckwarmers- heavy weight, light weight, lace, ribbing, funky, simple- all good-looking. Hopefully there will be one that calls to the fiber in the bag you got!
Library - In January 2009, the book "Spinning Wheels and Accessories" by Pennington and Taylor (a $60 book) disappeared from the library. In February it was announced at the meeting that the book was taken without anyone signing the card but no one has yet brought it back. Soon the librarian will be calling everyone who attended the meeting to try to locate the book. Please, if you have it, and you realize you forgot to sign the card, contact the librarian so that we know where the book is. We need to find this book and many others.
GVHG 25th Anniversary! - We are having special events all year long, including a picnic next summer for all current and former members. Wendy Caffee is heading the Anniversary committee and she will need help planning. If you'd like to be a part of this, contact her.
Newsletter - Any suggestions you want to make or contributions you have can go to Diane Seely. The deadline for articles is the 25th of the month for the following month's newsletter. All members are welcome to contribute to the newsletter. Tell us about a fiber trip you took, or a spinning experiment you tried, or about a new book you bought. Anything fiber related is welcome.
If you have a get-together for spinning, knitting or other handwork and you'd like others to know about it so they can come join in, be sure to let the webmistress know so she can put it on our Events Calendar.
